Lions tamed at Gloucester

Lions tamed at Gloucester Pietersen: top-scored in Surrey's reply at Gloucester

Kevin Pietersen couldn't prevent Gloucestershire finally opening their Friends Life t20 account with a 46-run win over the Lions.

The Gladiators moved off the foot of the South Group, as well as ending a seven-match losing streak in Twenty20 cricket that stretches back to last season's competition, as they comfortably defended a total of 168-6.

Ian Cockbain was the star of the show for the hosts, hitting 78 from just 46 deliveries to rescue his side from 26-3 in the fifth over.

The 24-year-old smashed two sixes in one Chris Schofield over, the second of which took him through to his half-century off 35 balls.

He also took Dirk Nannes, Jade Dernbach and Yasir Arafat for maximums before perishing in the 19th over, his departure ending a fifth-wicket stand of 71 with Chris Taylor (32 not out).

Surrey's reply simply never got going, the dangerous opening duo Rory Hamilton-Brown and Steve Davies falling in the batting powerplay.

Pietersen did his best to keep his side afloat with 30 from 28 deliveries, although he did survive two big shouts of leg before wicket and hit just

two boundaries during his time at the crease.

He eventually departed to a stunning diving catch out in the deep by Cockbain, leaving the Lions limping along at 75-4.

In the end they didn't even manage to bat out their full 20 overs, Jade Dernbach - who had earlier claimed 3-27 - the last man to go with the score on 122.

Left-arm seamer David Payne finished as the pick of the Gloucestershire attack with 3-20 while spinners Muttiah Muralitharan and Kane Williamson had both claimed two wickets apiece.
