Hales hammers down on Bears

Hales hammers down on Bears Hales: hit 11 boundaries

Nottinghamshire extended their lead at the top of the Friends Life t20 North Group with a 10-run victory over Warwickshire at Trent Bridge.

Alex Hales' 67 helped the Outlaws, who had already beaten the same opponents in the reverse fixture at Edgbaston on Wednesday, reach 173-6.

Opener Hales, who has only recently returned from a broken jaw, hit 11 boundaries, mostly through the off side, during his impressive 40-ball knock

Australian Adam Voges weighed in with 39 during an 83-run stand for the second wicket before the hosts suffered a slight wobble in the middle overs.

After Voges fell to Steffan Piolet (2-28) and skipper David Hussey went cheaply for six, Nottinghamshire lost Hales, who was bowled by Darren Maddy, to leave the score on 124-4.

Although Chris Read (6) came and went quickly, Samit Patel gave the innings a much-needed late flourish with an unbeaten 37 from 26 deliveries.

The all-rounder continued to push his claims for an international recall by hitting three fours and a six during his time at the crease, although he did get an early let-off when he was dropped by Chris Woakes out in the deep.

Patel then also played his part with the ball, claiming 1-18 with his left-arm off-spin, as Warwickshire never really came close to reaching their target.

Their cause was not helped by the loss of Varun Chopra to the very first ball of their reply, while William Porterfield and Neil Carter also departed during the powerplay overs.

Maddy (28) and skipper Jim Troughton (24) did their best to launch a recovery effort, putting on 47 in the space of 6.1 overs.

Still, at 104-6 the game looked out of the Bears' reach. That they eventually ended up getting as close as they did in the final reckoning was down to some lusty blows from Woakes.

The England one-day international again showed off his ability to hit the ball cleanly to the boundary rope, as well as over it, with five fours and two sixes during an innings of 44 that saw him face only 19 deliveries.
