Australia beat White Ferns by six wickets

Australia assumed control of the earthquake and weather-affected Rose Bowl cricket series against New Zealand today by coasting to a six-wicket win in the second one-day international in Brisbane.

The trans-Tasman rivals were on par after the Twenty20 component was shared 2-2 in New Zealand four months ago but when the three-match ODI matches - relocated to Allan Border Field from Christchurch - got underway, Australia reasserted their dominance to retain the trophy with an unassailable lead.

Game one was washed out on Sunday and under clear skies the White Ferns were swamped as a comprehensive all-round performance enabled Australia to reach their winning target with 111 balls to spare.

Australia dictated terms as soon as Jodie Fields marked her return from an 18-month injury break by winning to toss and asking the under prepared visitors to bat.

Wickets fell at regular intervals - the loss of Lucy Doolan and batting mainstay Suzie Bates in Clea Smith's second over was a portent of doom as New Zealand could only muster 181 before being dismissed in the last ball of the 49th over.

Canterbury opening bat Frances Mackay had cause to celebrate her debut with 36 from 77 balls - a sheet anchor-type innings undone by Sara McGlashan's risky single to cover.

Mackay was well short, an unfortunate end to a patient knock that also included five boundaries.

Her opening partner Doolan had already departed for a nine-ball duck then the influential Bates was also dislodged by Smith's medium pace three deliveries later when well caught at gully by Jess Cameron, also without scoring.

Amy Satterthwaite (21) McGlashan (29) and Katey Martin (33) provided some stability in the middle order though none of the trio could break the shackles imposed by an economical Australian attack.

Smith was the chief destroyer with four for 32 from 9.5 overs while 20 overs of spin by Lisa Sthalekar (3-37) and Shelley Nitschke (2-24) ensured the run-rate was manageable as a wickets continued to fall.

The chase was straight forward for Australia although Canterbury pace bowler Lea Tahuhu also made a memorable start to her international career when she skittled opener Meg Manning for 11.

Nitschke (48) and Leah Poulton (54) then constructed a 106-run stand for the second wicket and although the duo and Alex Blackwell (0) were all dismissed within eight balls when the score was on 122, the result was practically a formality.

Doolan atoned for her duck by removing the Australian trio with sharp slips catches but an unbroken 60-run liaison for the fifth wicket between Cameron (37) and Sthalekar (23) in just nine overs completed the rout midway through the 32nd over.

Kate Broadmore claimed the wickets of Poulton and Blackwell during 3.3 otherwise expensive overs while captain Aimee Watkins was the other wicket taker when Nitschke exited.

Tahuhu was far from overawed against an aggressive batting line-up and could be satisfied with her figures of one for 38 from seven overs.

New Zealand now have to regroup and hope to salvage some pride in game three at the same venue on Thursday.
