Lions take care of business Roy: Set the tone for Surrey

Surrey picked up their second win five matches as they beat Essex by 43 runs in Monday's Friends Life t20 clash at the Kia Oval.

It is only the second time in 12 Twenty20 matches between the two sides the Lions have come out on top, with Tom Maynard top-scoring with 45 and Yasir Arafat taking 3-15 in three overs.

Surrey made 154-7 after winning the toss, recovering from the loss of Steven Davies and Rory Hamilton-Brown with 12 on the board.

Jason Roy (31 off 20 balls) added 35 with Maynard to get the hosts back on track while Maynard also enjoyed a 58-run partnership with Zander de Bruyn (28).

His 37-ball knock was ended by Tim Phillips, who then took his tally to 12 wickets in five matches by removing Gary Wilson next ball.

There was still time for teenager Zafar Ansari to smash 30 not out on his debut, the runs coming from just 18 balls with three fours and six.

Arafat then took care of Owais Shah and Ravi Bopara to undermine the Essex response, with only three batsmen reaching double figures.

At 59-5 they were in dire straights - Ryan ten Doeschate and Scott Styris both being run out - captain James Foster top scoring with 31 before holing out to long-on before complaining vehemently the ball from De Bruyn was over waist height.

But the decision stood and the innings fell away, De Bruyn finishing with 2-18 as Essex were skittled for 111 inside 18 overs.
